Leadership in Organisations

This module enables students to explore organizational strategy and the leader’s role within it, by exploring leadership theories, the differences between leadership and management, and the role of emotional intelligence in leadership.

Students will review their own personal style and impact as a leader, use case study to analyze leadership, and discuss the implications of both organizational and national cultures.

Course Description

Recognising and developing leadership skills in any organisation are key: trust and confidence in top leadership is the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction and effective communication.

This module covers:

• Understanding strategy, the differences between strategic and operational thinking, and the leader’s role within it.
• The differences between the role of leadership and management.
• Defining and exploring different perspectives on leadership, and how leaders spend their time.
• The power of emotional intelligence and leadership.
• Leadership styles – exploring different styles, evaluating preferred leadership styles and leadership requirements for their role.
• Cultural analysis – understanding the implications of cultural differences for leaders of multi-cultural teams, exploring organizational culture and national cultures to develop cultural awareness.

In support of their learning outcomes, students will evaluate their personal leadership style and strengths, the difference it makes, and will present their forward view plan for taking outcomes into their working environment.

Who is it for?

This module is for those looking to undertake a leadership role or to better understand leadership within organisations, and the leader's role.

Timetable

The module spans four days of classroom delivery, delivered on campus, which is highly interactive and benefits from group work, discussions, case study and presentations.

Time is given to individual reflection and evaluating personal leadership styles.

Modules will run from 09:00-17:00 on the first two days and from 09:00-13:00 on the final day (UK time).
