This half-day workshop provides practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to safely insert peripheral vascular access devices (a cannula). The theoretical underpinning includes: awareness of professional conduct and accountability in the context of this skill, site selection, cannula gauge selection, potential complications during insertion, and care of the indwelling device. After the theoretical overview, students will be provided with a demonstration of the skill before having the opportunity to practice under direct supervision, on an appropriate training manikin. Following successful completion of this workshop students should undergo a period of supervised practice, by clinicians trained and experienced in this procedure, according to their own employers’ local policy.
